What size does a signature need to be?
There is no single answer, and that is the main reason people end up on a page like this one. Indian exam and government application portals each set their own rule, and those rules change between recruitment cycles. What is consistent is the shape of the requirement: a JPG file, a maximum file size in kilobytes, and sometimes a pixel width and height as well.
Common limits fall between 10KB and 50KB for a signature, which is noticeably smaller than the limit for a photograph on the same form. A signature is mostly white space with thin dark strokes, so it compresses well — which is why portals can afford to ask for such a small file.
Why a signature upload gets rejected
Most rejections come down to one of four things, and only one of them is file size:
- Too large a file. What this tool fixes.
- Wrong format. Many portals accept JPG only. This tool always outputs JPG.
- Too much blank space. A signature photographed from a distance is mostly paper. Crop before compressing, or the compression has to throw away detail from the strokes themselves.
- Too faint. Pencil or light blue ink on a phone camera often disappears once compressed. Use a dark pen.
Does the image stay private?
Yes. This tool uses a canvas element in your browser to redraw and re-encode the image. There is no upload step, no server that receives the file, and nothing stored afterwards. You can confirm this by turning off your internet connection after the page loads — the tool still works.

A very large photo holds more detail than a small file can store. Crop tightly around the signature first, so none of the file size is spent on blank paper.
Can I use a PNG with a transparent background?
Yes. The output is JPG, which has no transparency, so transparent areas are filled with white before compression. That is what most form portals expect.
Does resizing reduce the quality?
Compression always discards some detail. The tool searches for the highest quality that still fits your limit, so it gives away as little as possible. For a signature — dark strokes on white — the loss is usually invisible at these sizes.
