What actually changes when an image is compressed

JPG and WebP throw away detail your eye is least likely to miss — fine gradients, subtle colour shifts, texture in flat areas. Pushing the quality down far enough eventually produces visible blocks around edges and text. This tool searches for the highest quality setting that still fits under your limit, so you lose as little as the target allows rather than a fixed amount.

If quality alone cannot get there — a 12-megapixel photo will not reach 20KB at full size without turning to mush — the tool reduces the pixel dimensions in steps until it fits. That is usually the right trade: a smaller, sharp image beats a large, smeared one.

When to compress, and when to resize instead

Compress when somebody has given you a file size limit. Resize when somebody has given you pixel dimensions. They are different problems and mixing them up is the usual reason an upload keeps failing. If your form specifies both, use the passport photo resizer, which holds dimensions fixed while hitting a KB target.

Your files stay on your device

This page never uploads anything. The image is decoded and re-encoded by a canvas element inside your own browser, so there is no server that receives it and nothing to delete afterwards. It also means the tool keeps working if your connection drops mid-task.

Frequently asked questions

Does compressing an image reduce its dimensions?

Not unless it has to. The tool first lowers the encoding quality, which changes file size without touching the pixel dimensions. Only if your target is too small to reach that way does it start reducing dimensions, and only when 'Shrink if needed' is selected.

Why is the result a little under my target rather than exactly on it?

Encoded file size does not move smoothly with quality, so there is no setting that lands on an exact byte count. The tool finds the largest size that still fits under your limit, which is what upload forms actually check.

Can I compress a PNG and keep it a PNG?

This page outputs JPG or WebP, because PNG is lossless and has no quality dial to turn. If you need a smaller PNG, converting it to JPG or WebP is almost always the answer — use the image converter for that.

Is there a limit on file size or number of images?

There is no server, so there is no quota. The practical limit is your device's memory: very large images, above roughly 50 megapixels, can fail on older phones.

Will compressing reduce the quality noticeably?

At 100KB and above for a normal photo, rarely. At 20KB it is visible. The preview shows exactly what you are about to download, so you can judge before committing.
