Which format to choose

JPG is the safe default for photographs and for any upload form, because everything accepts it. It discards some detail to stay small and cannot store transparency.

PNG is lossless, so text and line art stay crisp and transparency survives. The cost is size — a photograph saved as PNG is typically several times larger than the same photograph as JPG.

WebP is smaller than both at comparable quality and supports transparency, which makes it the best choice for websites. Some older desktop software and a few government portals still refuse it, so check before you rely on it.

What converting cannot fix

Converting a JPG to PNG does not restore the detail the JPG already discarded — it just stores the damaged version losslessly, in a larger file. Converting in the other direction, PNG to JPG, does lose detail, permanently. Always keep the original if you might need it again.

Your files stay on your device

This page never uploads anything. The image is decoded and re-encoded by a canvas element inside your own browser, so there is no server that receives it and nothing to delete afterwards. It also means the tool keeps working if your connection drops mid-task.

Frequently asked questions

Does converting PNG to JPG reduce quality?

Yes, slightly. JPG is a lossy format, so some detail is discarded during conversion. For photographs the difference is usually invisible; for screenshots with sharp text it can be noticeable around the letters.

Why did my transparent background turn white?

JPG cannot store transparency at all, so transparent pixels have to be filled with something. Choose PNG or WebP as the output format if you need the transparency kept, or pick a different fill colour above.

Can I convert a HEIC photo from an iPhone?

Only if your browser can open HEIC, which Safari on Apple devices can and most others cannot. If the file will not load, set your iPhone camera to 'Most Compatible' so it saves JPGs directly.

Does converting to WebP make the file smaller?

Usually, often by 25 to 35 per cent against a JPG of similar quality. That is why it is worth using on websites. Do not use it for an upload form unless the form says it accepts WebP.

Is the converted image the same dimensions as the original?

Yes. This tool only changes the format. Use the image resizer if you also need different pixel dimensions.
